    About This Condition

Erectile Dysfunction & VA Disability Claims

Erectile dysfunction is a sensitive but incredibly common medical issue for veterans. It is frequently the direct result of physiological trauma, psychological stress, or the side effects of medications used to treat service-connected conditions. Despite how common it is, many veterans hesitate to claim ED, missing out on specialized compensation from the VA.

At AIDE, we handle your evaluation with the utmost privacy and clinical professionalism. We understand the neurochemical and physiological pathways that link your military service — and the treatments you receive — to your ED. Our independent evaluations provide the solid medical rationale required to support your claim. Every evaluation is conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth by a provider properly licensed in your state.

Under Diagnostic Code 7522, standard ED is rated at 0%. But here is why that matters: a service-connected 0% rating for ED is critical because it qualifies you for Special Monthly Compensation (SMC-K). SMC-K is an additional, tax-free monthly payment awarded for the loss of use of a creative organ. Connecting your ED to your service is the key to unlocking this specific monthly financial benefit.

    Evidence That Strengthens Your Claim

ED Documentation & Secondary Service-Connection Evidence

Documented Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosis or Treatment History

Treatment records noting ED, prescriptions for PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil/Viagra, tadalafil/Cialis, vardenafil/Levitra), urology consultations, or documented complaints to primary care. Records do not need to be extensive — even a single notation of ED with prescribed medication establishes the current disability for rating purposes. Many veterans avoid documenting ED out of embarrassment; once you decide to claim, every record helps.

Records of the Service-Connected Primary Condition

ED is almost always claimed secondary to another service-connected condition because direct service-connection is uncommon. The strongest secondary pathways include: PTSD or depression (psychogenic ED is well-established in literature); medications prescribed for service-connected conditions (SSRIs/SNRIs for PTSD/depression, antihypertensives for hypertension, opioids for chronic pain); diabetes mellitus type 2 (a recognized PACT Act presumptive for many veterans); service-connected vascular conditions; spinal cord or pelvic injuries; and prostate cancer treatment. Documentation of the primary condition plus the temporal relationship to ED onset is the foundation of the secondary claim.

Medication History Showing Treatment for Service-Connected Conditions

If your ED is medication-induced, a prescription history establishing long-term use of medications known to cause ED is critical. Examples include SSRIs (sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine), SNRIs (venlafaxine, duloxetine), beta-blockers (metoprolol, atenolol), thiazide diuretics, opioids, and antiandrogens. The medication must be prescribed for a service-connected condition for the secondary claim to succeed.

Documentation of Penile Deformity (if applicable)

The schedular rating under DC 7522 requires both loss of erectile power AND deformity of the penis (e.g., Peyronie's disease, traumatic deformity). Without documented physical deformity, ED is rated at 0% schedular but qualifies for Special Monthly Compensation under SMC-K (loss of use of a creative organ), which provides an additional fixed monthly payment regardless of the 0% schedular rating. Most ED claims result in 0% schedular + SMC-K. Document any physical findings if present, but understand that SMC-K is the primary monetary benefit for most ED claims.
